Bassetlaw MP John Mann has criticised the latest report by the House of Commons Standards Committee which he says leaves “MPs still marking their own homework.”
The report calls for the number of lay members on the Committee to be increased but continues to prevent them from voting, leaving MPs as the sole decision makers.
John Mann said “This report continues to allow MPs to mark their own homework and exposes Parliament at its worst. Its attempts at reform are simply symbolic and there is no real change that will make MPs more accountable.”
Mann continued “There is no point in increasing the number of lay members if they don’t have the ability to vote or participate in the decision making process. The committee is simply paying lip service to the calls for greater accountability. This is a wasted opportunity to enact real change.”
