Bassetlaw MP Says Issues at HMP Ranby Were Ignored

In the last few minutes the Government has released the figures for the number of deaths in UK prisons in 2015. Extraordinarily the figures put HMP Ranby, a category C prison in Bassetlaw, at the top of the list.

Bassetlaw MP John Mann says that Government and Prison Authorities failed to act in 2014 when he raised concerns about the problems at HMP Ranby.

Statistics released today by the Government show that over the last three years there have been 13 deaths, 8 of which were suicides at the category C prison and last year 6 deaths, 4 which were suicides.

John Mann MP said “In 2014 I met with the Chief Inspector of Prisons, the Governor of Ranby Prison and the Prisons Minister and raised my concerns about what was going on inside the Prison.”

Mann continued “I told them repeatedly from June to December 2014 about the problems with staff morale, prisoners accessing mobile phones and drugs and the behaviour of the senior management regime.”

“In 2014 I alleged experienced Prison Officers were being forced out in dubious circumstances and provided the evidence to back this up. Why did they fail to act on this issue and allow Ranby to become one of the worst prisons in the UK?
