Bassetlaw MP Says Record Rise in Prison Suicides Shows the Need for More Prison Officers

Bassetlaw MP John Mann has said that the latest statistics published today by the Ministry of Justice showing Prison suicides at record levels highlights the need for the Government to hire more prison officers.

Statistics released today showed that a record number of inmates killed themselves in 2016 in prisons in England and Wales.

John Mann MP said “Today’s figures sadly show that more and more inmates in our Prisons are killing themselves and its clear the Government needs to act now.”

John Mann continued “In 2015 HMP Ranby, a category C prison in Bassetlaw had a record number of inmates take their own lives. Since then a new management team has been installed and I have supported them and the new approach they have taken. However, it’s clear that they can only continue to make improvements if more prison officers are now employed.”

“More prison officers are also needed to protect the people who work in our prisons and the inmates who simply want to serve their time and return to society. The Government has repeatedly turned down my requests for prisons to be given more officers, sadly today we have seen the sad consequences of their cuts to the prison service.”
