John Mann has today written to the leaders of all the major political parties calling on them to investigate information collected by Whips relating to historic child abuse.
The Bassetlaw MP commented: “Currently the Church of England is leading the way by investigating every member of the clergy since 1950, alive and dead, for any indication of knowledge of or involvement in child abuse and handing all information found to the police.”
“The infamous interview with former Whip Tim Fortescue in 1995, in which he mentioned Parliamentary scandals “involving small boys” that the Whips would help to cover up, demonstrates that political parties have information which could bring abusers to justice.”
“Every living Whip must be questioned by their party on any evidence or rumours that were circulating at the time they were in post. Currently there are police investigations ongoing into a number of former Members of Parliament, with at least 22 names alleged to have been involved.”
“Only when all institutions, including political parties, follow the commendable lead given by the Church of England will the victims have chance of justice.”
