Treasury Select Committee Member John Mann MP is calling for the Chairman and Chief Executive of HSBC to resign following the revelation that HSBC lobbied UK officials to allow Rami Makhlouf to keep his bank accounts open.
Rami Makhlouf is a Syrian national and a member of Syrian President Assad’s family who has been on a US sanction list since 2008 and is known as the ‘poster boy’ for Syrian corruption.
John Mann MP said “This latest revelation is just further proof that Douglas Flint and Stuart Gulliver are presiding over a bank that views international law as something that doesn’t apply to them.”
Mann continued “The fact that HSBC lobbied UK officials on behalf of this individual is outrageous and speaks volumes about what is important to the bank.”
“Douglas Flint and Stuart Gulliver have been in charge of HSBC for six years. They could have sorted this bank out, but clearly they haven’t and they should resign because of this failure.”
