John Mann MP will chair a new Parliamentary Group in Parliament set up to highlight the history of the Pilgrims, Bassetlaw’s heritage and to increase tourism.
Mann commented: “The history of those who travelled to the “New World” begins in Bassetlaw, with 2020 being the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims landing in America.”
“It is important that our area fully celebrates the historic significance and benefits from the anticipated increase in tourism. That should include the establishment of tour routes, exhibitions at local museums, and a sound and lights show.”
“Local churches have already begun preparations with their Illuminate 400 project where there will be celebrations using sound and light to illuminate the Pilgrims’ stories.”
“As Chair of the Parliamentary Group I will be working to ensure that American tourists know all about Bassetlaw and its historic connections and that the Government provides the much needed funding required to highlight our story and encourage visitors to the area.”
“I am also delighted that Robert Jenrick MP has been elected as an officer of the group and I look forward to working together to boost tourism in our area.”
