Bassetlaw MP John Mann today welcomed the news that HMP Ranby will be a ‘Reform Prison’ but warned that more needs to be done to tackle the overwhelming problem of so-called legal highs getting into the prison.
Mann commented: “The Government’s announcement is welcome. I am today calling on the Governor to be immediately given the finances he needs to build a secure perimeter and to totally overhaul drug treatment. Ranby is currently overwhelmed by legal highs and the changes will only be a success if the drug problem is dealt with.”
“Funding is needed for a higher perimeter fence and for trees down one side of prison to be cut be cut down. This would make it substantially harder for those outside of the prison to get drugs in.”
“I also back the proposals for coherent vocational training for prisoners to be introduced. We have to reduce reoffending and good practical skills ready for the world outside will help bring down numbers.”
“I will continue to challenge the Government if Ranby is not immediately given the tools it needs to combat the drug problems”
