Bassetlaw MP John Mann has slammed the plan to pass over a £490 million train building contract to Spain as a “stab in the back.”
The Spanish company CAF was chosen in preference to Bombadier in Derby for the contract to provide nearly 300 vehicles to Arriva Rail North.
Mann commented: “It is now expected that this Spanish company will try to take on the contracts for other UK projects including work on the HS2 line.”
“We are a soft touch in this country. Instead of dishing out contracts around Europe we should be ensuring that British workers benefit from improvements to infrastructure.”
“All contracts that have anything to do with national infrastructure or Government spending should also oblige companies to take on British apprentices and give them high-quality training.”
“If expensive transport projects are to go ahead, workers in Britain should benefit.”
