John Mann MP has written to the Home Secretary and the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police calling on them to urgently address the shortcomings in the UK’s anti-terrorist capabilities. The move comes as Theresa May refused today in Parliament to deny that there have been large cuts to the social media monitoring unit at the counter-terrorism squad in Scotland Yard.
The Bassetlaw MP commented:
“The large cut to the budget for the Met’s counter-terrorist social media monitoring unit endangers the UK as it allows more terrorist recruitment and organisation to go unnoticed.”
“I have written to Theresa May and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner today to urge them to prioritise counter-terrorism and ensure that budget cuts do not come at the price of the public’s safety.”
“At this time of serious concern over home-grown terrorism the Home Secretary should immediately restore the budget available to counter-terrorism forces in the UK.”
