Weekly Retford Times Column

On Monday I met with the Minister of State for Transport to discuss the Elkesley bypass. We agreed that his department would relook at installing sound barriers at Elkesley and at the option for the national cycleway to use the bridge. The delays to the bridge since 2010 have been frustrating and it has been a fight to get the Government to commit to the work but now it is a matter of making sure the improvements work for the village and the entire area.

This week in Parliament I was the only Nottinghamshire MP who voted to stop fracking. I voted against the leadership of all major parties including my own and supported a ‘moratorium’ on fracking which would have meant that all fracking would be immediately stopped until a full, independent assessment of the risks and benefits has taken place. Whilst I am happy to have an open mind on fracking, I can see no reason why it should not be put on hold until we have all the evidence that local people need to make up their minds whether they want fracking in their area. The motion was unfortunately voted down in the House of Commons by 308 to 52.

I have been contacted by Virgin Atlantic regarding their pilot career programme. They are looking for people aged between 13 and 25 to attend an introductory day which will give details about the opportunities they have. No flying experience is necessary and successful recruits can expect to train in both the UK and the US and to be able to fly long-haul flights after 18 months. The introductory day takes place on 24th January. For further details please contact my office on 01909 506200 or email me mannj@parliament.uk as soon as possible.

I would like to wish all readers of the Retford Times a very Merry Christmas. Like most people for me the festive period is a time for family and to consider what Christmas is really all about. On Sunday I was at The Well for Carols by Candlelight and read from the Book of Isaiah. As well as enjoying some of my favourite carols I was struck by the feeling of community and togetherness that is sadly often lacking in modern society. Thank you to everyone at The Well for a very enjoyable festive evening.

Last week I challenged the Minister of State at the Department of Transport about the Elkesley Bridge on the A1. The previous Government got rid of six roundabouts on the A1 within three years of my taking the then Minister to see the problems they were creating; yet the bridge has only just begun to be built during the past year. I suggested to the current Minister that his dillydallying had caused great frustration locally and he has agreed to meet me to discuss future developments. I will also push him ensure that the bridge across the A1 that will connect Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire is also part of a strategic cycle way.

This week in Parliament I pressured the Government on its proposed changes on how fracking is regulated in the UK. Most people who have contacted me in recent months are backing my proposal for no fracking wells to be drilled within two kilometres of any town or village. I supported amendments that would close loopholes around environmental regulations and require greater transparency about the fluids used in fracking and the resulting methane gas emissions. Considering the importance of drilling safety I also backed measures which would make independent well inspections obligatory for all sites. I will continue to support efforts which force the Government to improve safety and will also work to ensure that my proposal of a two kilometre zone around villages and towns is respected.

The recent fire in Retford claimed one life and destroyed the flats that several other people lived in. It is important that investigators are able to piece together what happened to cause the fire and there is no use in speculating at this stage – as Councillor Alan Chambers told this paper, this is a time for Retford to support those who need it. As a general point, however, residents should be aware that safety measures in flats especially can be life-saving and it is the responsibility of landlords to ensure that properties meet the necessary specifications. If you are concerned that your property is unsafe, or it would be difficult for you to leave in the event of a fire, contact your landlord to inform them of your situation.

Hundreds of Retford residents have emailed me over the past two weeks asking me to vote in Parliament for a new NHS Bill. If it becomes law the new measures will reverse the privatisation of NHS services that has been put in place since 2010 and focus funding on doctors and nurses. I have long campaigned against privatisation of essential health services – it allows companies to take profitable parts of the NHS and strip down services whilst the taxpayer continues to pay to keep the system afloat. I can confirm therefore that in Parliament last Friday I did back the new NHS Bill and will continue to fight for all NHS services to be free and accessible.

It was devastating to learn of the tragic news that five teenagers were killed last weekend on the A630. The crash happened 100 metres from the spot where three other teenagers were killed in 2011. The police now have to work through the details, having released one man on bail, but the crash raises concerns about how safe our roads really are. The conditions last weekend were bad, with terrible visibility due to the fog.
